Ambulance Crash Log
Middle Twp. police talking to witnesses of ambulance crash - New Jersey

Feb 7, 2010 - 6:54:12 PM

Police are still taking formal statements from witnesses who were near the scene of an accident that sent one woman to a hospital in serious condition after her car was hit by an ambulance.

The Middle Township Police Department plans to turn over those statements to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, "hopefully by Friday," police Lt. John Edwards said.

Edwards could not comment on how long it would take the Prosecutor's Office to release information about the crash. The Prosecutor's Office did not immediately return phone calls Tuesday about the case.

The investigation focuses on an accident that took place Jan. 26 on Route 9 near Indian Trail Road.

Joseph Sims Jr., 46, of the Erma section of Lower Township, was driving an ambulance toward a fire at the home where he lived with his father. His father, Joseph Sims, 85, died in the fire. Police said Sims was not responding to the fire "in an official capacity."

Sims left the Middle Township Ambulance Corps building on Route 9 in Cape May Court House and was headed south when he struck a red SUV. The SUV's driver, Alyn Toth, 43, of the Burleigh section of Middle Township, was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City, where she was in serious condition.

Police said Toth's condition was "stable" last week. The family has refused to comment on her condition.
