Ambulance Crash Log
Ambulance, truck, car in US-131 chain reaction crash - Michigan

May 8, 2008 - 1:25:39 PM

A street sweeper from a private company ran into the back of a passenger vehicle slowing for an ambulance, causing the commercial truck to roll off the highway and nearly into Plaster Creek, officials said.

The crash occurred around 1:30 today near the Burton Street on-ramp to southbound U.S. 131.

The driver of a passenger vehicle was slowing in the right lane for the paramedics, who were on their way to an emergency call with lights and sirens activated, when she was struck from behind by the street sweeper, said State Police Lt. Steve Harper.

The collision caused the street sweeper to lose control and roll off the west edge of the highway, landing near Plaster Creek. Some trees were the only thing that saved the truck from going into the creek, Harper said.

The driver of the street sweeper was in stable condition and taken to the hospital, Harper said. A crane with a cable had been used to stabilize the vehicle while medical personnel tended to the driver.

The AMR ambulance sustained some damage after hitting something in all the chaos, Harper said.
