A firefighter/paramedic and the driver of a car
received minor injuries Thursday night when the car collided with a
Rolling Meadows ambulance.
At about 8:30 p.m., the ambulance and two other Rolling
Meadows Fire Department vehicles were on Meacham Road north of Deepwood
Lane with their lights and sirens going, on their way an emergency call.
The car pulled over to let the battalion chief's vehicle
pass, but then tried to turn left across two lanes of traffic onto
Dawngate Lane and struck the side of the ambulance, said Commander Tom
Calcagno of the Rolling Meadows Police Department.
Both vehicles went onto the shoulder on the right-hand
side of the road.
The driver of the car was shaken up when the air bag
deployed and decided to go to the hospital. The firefighter/paramedic
decided later to check out a possible injury.
The driver of the car was cited with failure to yield
when turning left; failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving
under the influence of drugs.
The fire department called on their mutual aid pact with
other departments to send an ambulance to the original call as well as
to the scene. The ambulance involved in the accident was not carrying
any patients at the time.
Calcagno said the name of the driver of the car would be
released later.
