Paramedic wounded in shooting - West Virginia
A Williamson, W.Va., paramedic was shot on the job Tuesday night as he
went to provide assistance to a motorist.
The shooting took place about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday along Little Oak
Street in Williamson, said Scott Thacker, operations manager for STAT
Ambulance Service. He identified the wounded paramedic as Rick Carey.
The STAT crew had stopped to help who it thought to be a troubled
motorist, Thacker said.
Carey approached the vehicle and immediately had a gun pointed at him,
Thacker said. A struggle ensued as Carey tried to push the firearm away.
The motorist then fired the weapon striking Carey in the hand.
The vehicle fled, Thacker said. The incident is being investigated by
the Williamson Police Department.
Thacker described Carey to have been in stable condition Wednesday
afternoon. He was transported to Huntington for possible surgery at St.
Mary’s Medical Center.
Carey has been with the company for seven years, Thacker said. The
for-profit company is the primary ambulance care for Mingo County.
