EMTs threatened by armed Exeter man they try to help - Rhode Island
EXETER, R.I. -- A rescue crew responded to the home of a man going
into diabetic shock Friday morning, but found themselves looking into
the muzzle of a pistol as the man threatened to kill them, say the state
police.
Two emergency medical technicians arrived about 6:10 a.m. at the home
of Steven McKiernan, where earlier McKiernan had had an argument with
his wife, said state police Capt. Darren Delaney.
When one of the EMTs asked McKiernan if he wanted some orange juice
to stabilize his blood sugar, said Delaney, McKiernan got up, went into
another room and came out with a pistol, threatening to kill the EMTs
and his wife.
One of the EMTs, Robert Jencks, managed to grab the gun away from
McKiernan and gave it to the other EMT, who ran out of the house with it
and called 911, Delaney said.
When two state police troopers arrived, Delaney said, another
struggle ensued. One trooper sustained a broken hand and was treated and
released.
Delaney said McKiernan, who is 49 or 50 years old, faces several
charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of
assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and domestic assault.
