Ambulance with passengers clipped right after accident - Massachusetts
Four people were injured after two successive car accidents on Interstate 495 yesterday, in which an ambulance taking two people from a crash on the highway was hit, fire officials said.
About 1:25 p.m., a Jaguar driven by Leonard Mills, 73, hit the left guardrail on Rte. 495 North just before Rte. 290, said Fire Lt. Paul Zompetti. Two people, Mills and his passenger, were taken to Marlborough Hospital, Zompetti said.
When the ambulance from that accident started to pull out about 1:50 p.m., a Chevy Blazer in the middle lane slowed down but a tractor trailer behind the sport utility vehicle did not, Zompetti said. As a result, the tractor trailer crashed into the back of the SUV and the SUV hit the front right corner of the ambulance, Zompetti said.
The impact was "more of a glancing blow," he said.
Two people from the SUV, the driver, Sandra Woodfin, 47, and her passenger, were taken to Marlborough Hospital, Zompetti said.
None of the injuries were serious, Zompetti said.
"They were transported as precautions," he said. The people riding in the ambulance that was hit were not further injured.
No charges have been filed yet and the accidents are under investigation, said Sgt. Tim Finn of the state police.
