Crash Sends Ambulance Up In Flames - Texas

Two crew members of an Amarillo Medical Services ambulance making an emergency run were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital in unknown condition after their unit caught fire during a two-vehicle collision Sunday night.
The driver of the other vehicle, a red GMC pickup, also was transported in unknown condition, Amarillo police Sgt. J.D. Moore said.
The collision occurred at 5:17 p.m. at the intersection of North Mirror Street and Northeast Seventh Avenue.
Moore said the northbound pickup "was going too fast" when it crossed the center line of the four-lane street and struck a guardrail on the inside northbound lane.
The ambulance, which was traveling southbound with lights and siren activated en route to pick up a patient, swerved left but the vehicles collided, Moore said.
The ambulance, its front ripped off from the license tag to the driver's side, ended up facing south with its front against a guardrail.
The cause of a fire that ignited inside the ambulance was unknown and it was unclear Sunday night if the blaze injured the crew members, a man and a woman, Moore said.
"It's pretty much totaled," Moore said of the ambulance. "The dash is gone."
The pickup traveled north along the guardrail, struck an electrical pole with enough force to cause it to lean, crossed Seventh and came to rest facing south on top of a stop sign, Moore said. A male passenger in the pickup did not need to go to the hospital, Moore said.
