Three injured in crash involving ambulance - Delaware
Three people were injured, one seriously, in an accident involving an ambulance this morning on southbound Route 1 at Daniels Road in northern Sussex County.
Delaware State Police said the Hart to Heart ambulance collided with a Saturn Ion as its driver, Jessica L. Coffey, 25, of Milford tried to make a u-turn from the southbound shoulder and moved directly in front of the ambulance.
Coffey was not wearing a seat belt and was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital and then to Christiana Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the ambulance, James M. Larrimore III, 18, of Lincoln was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt and was not charged in the accident, police said.
His two passengers, Marion W. Lacurts, 59, of Bishopville and a nurse, Cary Rutherford, 45, of Milton were taken to Beebe Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Police said it was not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
The accident happened at 4:30 a.m.
Both lanes of Route 1 were closed for three hours while investigators examined the scene. The ambulance was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash, police said.
