Excellent hard hitting comments on the insanity of emergency vehicle operations. We all need to cut to the chase and recognize that almost every one of these ambulance accidents are PREVENTABLE with the use of good common sense and operating our vehicles with "due regard" for the safety of ourselves and others --- even when lights and sirens are on. In my fire station, is a sign that reads: "If you arrive at the scene 30 seconds late, no one will notice. But if you arrive at the scene 30 seconds early and kill someone in the process, no one will ever forget!" Vehicle accidents are the number one risk area for EMS agencies and we need to reduce this risk by all available means possible --- including good policies, effective driver testing and evaluation, and vehicle monitoring systems.
