Ambulance Crash Log
Angel 1 Crashes At Santa Fe Airport - New Mexico

Dec 28, 2003, 20:11

Normally responsible for rescuing patients all over New Mexico, the medical helicopter Angel 1 needed rescuing itself Saturday night after it crashed at the Santa Fe airport attempting to park inside a hangar.

"(The pilot) cut the turn a little too sharp, the rotors hit the hangar door, and that's what caused the accident," said New Mexico State Police Lt. Robert Shilling.

Authorities say the pilot, Malcolm Pearson, escaped with minor injuries, but the helicopter may be a total loss. "Obviously modern helicopters … when they come in contact with something, there's going to be major damage," Shilling said.

Angel 1 is one of New Mexico's air rescue helicopters and is based at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Santa Fe.
