I spent most of my life in Virginia where the only choice for most of the state is to either be a Paramedic/FF or work for a private company. I for one had and still have no desire to ever be a Medic/FF. I chose being a Paramedic as a profession and you do what you have to to get a job. I was a Critical Care Paramedic and enjoyed it greatly and do not feel that I was lazy or the vast majority of the people that I worked with. There are always the exception, but go in some of the Fire Dept's in the area. It was them sitting around while we were killing ourselves for 16hrs a day. I asure you that no one at McDonald's could have kept up with the amount of work we did. 43 ambulances staffed a day and usually no trucks available to get assistance when you needed it. Lunch break, whats that? Even McDonald's people get that. You spend two hours in the back of a truck with a pt on a vent, arterial sheeth, 6-7 drips, needing a CABG and being the only trained person there with no chance of getting help if you need it.
