Ambulance Crash Log
Ambulance Involved in Crash -Kansas City, Kansas

Oct 30, 2005, 08:29

Two Kansas City, Kansas paramedics are injured as they tried to get a man to the hospital. Fox Four's Leslie Carto learned first hand just how dangerous emergency service can be.

Medics we rode with say the most dangerous season is approaching, when sheets of ice coat the roads. So they say when you see them rushing by, get out of the way. "You can never say we've seen everything," says Paramedic Robert Slaton.

And they're off to see more. Slaton has been a paramedic for twelve years. Still, each ride puts him on edge. "Because you never know what someone else is going to do," he says.
This morning a KCK crew, and another driver, didn't see each other coming. Two paramedics in back ended up at KU Medical Center, along with their patient, a man in critical condition from a gunshot wound.

Slaton and his partner respond to a call with sirens, lights and an air horn. Still Slaton says he feels safer in his own car. "When the strobes are going- it's like a target. People get focused on strobes and don't pay attention to what they're doing," he says.
Crews say even if they're in a hurry, bucking up a priority. "No one gets in the vehicle without being strapped in," says Slaton.

And with each call, Slaton and his partner say their goal is to help a patient, not end up one.

The gunshot victim is still in critical condition at KU. The paramedics didn't have life threatening injuries. We don't know if police will ticket either driver.
