Ambulance Crash Log
Tractor-Trailer Hits Ambulance - Alexander County, North Carolina

Aug 26, 2005, 12:12

The Alexander County Emergency Medical Services director was seriously injured when an ambulance collided with a tractor-trailer Thursday morning.

Bradley Earp was airlifted from Iredell Memorial Hospital to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was listed in good condition.

Earp was riding in the back of the EMS unit when it was struck on U.S. 64 at Old Mountain Road around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, said Trooper Greg Jones of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Two medics in the front of the ambulance - Erica Harris and Charlie Killian - were also injured. Harris and Killian were both taken to the Alexander campus of Frye Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released.

Jones said the wreck occurred when the EMS unit, driven by Harris, was en route to a call with lights and siren.

As it approached the intersection with Old Mountain Road, Jones said, the ambulance stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded through the intersection.

A westbound tractor-trailer driven by Christopher Peters of Coeburn, Va., struck the EMS unit.

“He swerved to the left into the eastbound lane where the truck collided with the ambulance,” Jones said.

Both vehicles then came to rest on the right side of the road.

Off-duty staff members responded to the scene, said Alexander County Manager Rick French. A unit from Iredell was dispatched to the original call.

A second Iredell unit went to the county line to provide stand-by service as did the Iredell County Rescue Squad.

Jones said U.S. 64 was shut down for about two hours because the tractor-trailers load of plywood spilled onto the roadway.

Jones said the investigation into the wreck is continuing.
