A MOVAC ambulance was heading west on East Main Street in Ilion around 12:15 p.m. Thursday when the vehicle's brakes reportedly failed, causing the rig to rear-end one car, which subsequently struck another vehicle, DeVaul said. The ambulance, driven by EMS Kenneth Dicob, 23, of Mohawk, was not responding to a call at the time of the accident. A 2000 GMC truck, driven by Ann Phillips, of Mohawk, was west bound on East Main Street when she stopped to turn left onto Hakes Road. Behind her truck, Bonnie View, of Frankfort, driving a 1993 Chevy, also stopped to wait for Phillip's to turn. It was then that the ambulance was unable to stop in time, striking View's vehicle and pushing it forward 137 feet. View's vehicle clipped the back of Phillips' truck as Phillips made the left turn, DeVaul said. View and her passenger, her 14-month-old grandson, were transported to St. Luke's Hospital by ambulance. View complained of knee pain. Her grandson was checked by doctors but appears fine, thanks to a child safety seat. Dicob was also transported to St. Luke's Hospital with back pain, DeVaul said. A passenger in the ambulance did not receive medical attention. There were no patients in the back of the ambulance at the time. DeVaul said she believes View and Dicob have since been released from the hospital without serious injury. Due to the impact, the rear section of View's Chevy was crushed and the back window was broken. Having recently filled the gas tank, gasoline spilled from View's vehicle in a 137 foot trail as the car skidded forward following impact, DeVaul said. The Ilion fire department and department of public works cleaned up the mess without incident. The ambulance and View's Chevy were both towed from the scene, the ambulance by Juliano's of Frankfort and the car by North Side Collission, of Ilion. No tickets have been issued yet but the accident is still under investigation by Ilion police. The ambulance will be inspected to verify Dicob's claim that the brakes failed, DeVaul said. |
