"What we have this morning is apparently a weather-related accident," said Erie spokesman Fred Diehl.
Six people were taken to hospitals after the accident, which occurred about 8:30 a.m. on County Road 8, about one mile west of Interstate 25. The extent of the injuries is not known. The identities of those involved have not been released. The Tri-Area Ambulance District ambulance was transporting three patients and was runnning "hot" with its lights and sirens on when the crash occurred, Diehl said. The patients were from a previous head-on collision, 7NEWS reported. Police say an eastbound minivan tried to slow down for the westbound ambulance -- but ended up skidding directly into its path. The ambulance slammed into the passenger's side of the van, then rolled off the north side of the road and landed upside down. The minivan also flipped but it landed right side up. The driver was the only person inside the minivan.
