JOB CLASSIFICATION: Firefighter/Paramedic (PREFERRED) or Paramedic
DEPARTMENT: Fire Department SALARY: $40,000

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under supervision, control and extinguish fires, protect lives and property, and administer emergency medical services.

EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:
-Respond to fire alarms, emergency medical service calls and other emergency calls.
-Perform fire suppression functions including rescue, deploying and operating hose, ventilating roofs, performing salvage work after fires.
-Perform other related tasks associated with fire suppression.
-Administer first aid and emergency medical services to injured persons. -Inspect, clean and maintain apparatus, equipment, quarters and grounds.
-Perform maintenance of fire hydrants.
-Participate in fire training classes and drills and study technical materials on equipment operation, fire suppression and fire prevention to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.
-Perform related duties such as physical training each shift.
-Study maps to learn the district assigned as necessary.
-Be familiar with apparatus and pump operation.
-Perform duties of emergency medical technician.
-Conduct station tours and fire safety programs for school children.
-Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
-Must have skill in communicating and understanding written and oral instructions.
-Ability to reason abstractly using mechanical concepts.
-Must have the ability to take effective action in emergency situations.
-Must exhibit emotional stability and courage to perform hazardous fire fighting duties under stress.
-Must get along well with the public.
-Must maintain physical endurance and agility to perform the job functions.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-High School graduate or GED equivalent.
-Basic Fire Fighter Certification or certifiable by Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)
-Certified as Paramedic by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
-Good moral character and good work ethic, and positive work history.
-Current class B Texas Driver’s License, or must obtain during first year of employment.

-Oral Interview (scheduled appointments) @ Public Safety Building, Fire Chief Conference Room
-Background Investigation
-Polygraph Test
-Psychological Examination
-Medical Examination - prior to appointment, all eligible applicants will be subjected to a physical exam and drug screen.
