Roger Dale Gregory, of West Stinson Rd., was charged with driving under the influence, evading arrest, violation of implied consent law, fleeing in a motor vehicle, assault, and aggravated assault, following a series of incidents that began approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday February 22.
Macon County EMS notified the Sheriff's Department of a call they received reporting a man passed out in his truck on Tooley Branch Road.
When EMS personnel approached the individual in the truck, the occupant allegedly awakened and began to fight, pushing and kicking at the emergency tecnicians.
EMS technicians were advised by the Sheriff's Department to back off the situation.
Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons, Sergeant Jeff Brewer, Deputy Ron Smith, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol began a search of the area. They reportedly located the suspect approximately 20 minutes later, parked down Tooley Branch Road where the driver had apparently traveled up a logging road into the woods.
EMS Technician James Barlow was transported to Macon County General Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the attack when Gregory allegedly kicked Barlow in the elbow.
The suspect began moving in his vehicle again, traveling near a pipeline and going through several creeks and ditches, according to witnesses.
When law enforcement spotted the suspect again, approximately 30 minutes later, Gregory allegedly attempted to run over Deputy Ron Smith.
Sheriff Gammons reportedly advised Deputy Smith to avoid a confrontation, if possible. When the suspect parked on the road, Sheriff Gammons, Sergeant Brewer, and Detective Bennie Hudgens were able to close in on Gregory and block his truck, according to reports, but the suspect failed to exit the vehicle.
Law enforcement officials were able to take the suspect into custody, after repeated instructions, and he was taken to the Macon County Justice Center, the Sheriff reports.
Roger Dale Gregory was... first placed in a drunk tank, where he attempted to jump off a concrete bench, falling each time he landed, according to witnesses.
Gregory also reportedly attempted to break glass out of the door and attempted to knock out the overhead light. The cell became flooded with water as a result of the suspect's attempts to tear up the toilet, according to deputy reports.
During attempts to transfer Gregory to a safer cell, Sergeant Brewer's left elbow was injured and the suspect allegedly grabbed Corrections Officer Adam Nash by the feet and bit Sergeant Nash's forearm, drawing blood. Both law enforcement officials reportedly required treatment at the Macon County General ER.
Records indicate Roger Dale Gregory is on felony probation out of Judge J.O. Bond's court. A February 28 General Sessions Court date was scheduled and bond was set at $15,000 for the DUI, fleeing, and assault charges; but Gregory was held at the Macon County jail without bond on the violation of probation charge, awaiting a June 7 Criminal Court date.
