They’ve been doing it for centuries. It would be rare to find someone who has not been exposed to this distinctive talent at least once in a lifetime. They can be found at a wide variety of events, from somber to the most joyous occasions. They come one at time, or a dozen or more. Entertaining, yes; but they’re also pleased to be able to serve in more reflective settings.
They must be first-rate at what they do - they are booked to perform at the JEMS Convention in Baltimore, in March 2007. And, for the first time, they are preparing to participate on New York’s 5th Avenue in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade.
EMT John J. Manning told EMSNetwork News, “As far we know, there are only two in the United States; Boston EMS and ours. Ours is comprised of about 35 members. All members work at New York City Fire, EMS Department, as EMT'S and paramedics.”
“It is important that the EMS community know we are here to serve them,” said Manning. “We also hope to help promote unity within our service through our music.”
Manning is the Band Manager for the New York City Fire Department Emergency Medical Service Pipes and Drums Band, a bagpipe and drum playing organization that serves up its unique music to the residents of New York and the nation at funerals, weddings and everything in between.
Their music, ceremonial dress and dignified manner can help provide formality, grace and reverence at services for EMS responders killed in the line of duty. Their lilting tunes and distinctive instruments add flair to festive events, formal or informal.
Formed in January of 2006, they recently made a concerted effort to make the organization more visible with the help of a complete makeover of their web site. Manning felt it was important to update the bands site; the hard practicing, committed volunteer members deserved it and the site educates visitors about the group.
In part, the site sports a Kids section with fun and educational activities, a listing of the members and officers, short musical selections for listening, photos, interesting bagpipe history tidbits, information about free lessons on the drums or bagpipes, options for supporters to help and more.
