TALK BACK
Ambulance Driver
by John Costello
I just read your column, and, similar to you, I watched Rescue 8 (except on the east coast, it was on 7PM on Wednesday night, so I didn't have to hurry home from school to watch it), began hanging out at the local rescue squad around 1960, eventually had one of those Pennsylvania Ambulance Attendant books, and remember when we kept a single back board in the station for use among 4 ambulances "in case we got sent out on a broken back". I'm pleased that someone else on this planet sees nothing wrong with the "Ambulance Driver" moniker. Last Thursday night, I began teaching an EMT class (the first whole class, instead of just segments, I've taught in more than 25 years) and showed Jim Page's video of the History of EMS and related some things to this class of fresh faces yearning for enlightenment from my youth. I finished up with asking them to tell me why they think the phrase "quality improvement" could be a bad thing, and not just a tool to bring a better level of service to our customers. Now, if they would just remember these things when they get into the field, I'll die a happy man. "Thanks for the Memories". John Costello, Bucks County, Pennsylvania
