University of New Mexico Hospital's rescue helicopter crashed in northern New Mexico Saturday night, state police said.

The pilot was the only person aboard Lifeguard helicopter and he escaped the crash with minor injuries, state police Lt. Jimmy Glascock said.

State police received a call shortly after 8 p.m. that contact had been lost with the helicopter's pilot. The pilot at some point was able to communicate his coordinates,k Glascock said.

The pilot, whose name was not immediately released, walked to N.M. 68 and was picked up by a state police officer, Glascock said.

"He was just shaken up," Glascock said of the pilot. "He may have received some minor injuries.

The pilot was transported to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos as a precaution.

The Federal Aviation Administration was contacted, Glascock said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
