Three paramedics injured in crash - Wilmington, Delaware

An early morning crash injured seven people Tuesday, including three paramedics on their way to an emergency call.

The crash, which occurred about 6:20 a.m., left the paramedics' vehicle on its roof at West Fourth and North Scott streets in Wilmington, said Cpl. Trinidad Navarro, spokesman for the New Castle County police.

A Chevrolet Blazer traveling south on Scott Street hit the passenger side of the paramedics' vehicle, which was westbound on Fourth Street, when the two vehicles entered the intersection at the same time, Navarro said.

The paramedics' vehicle had entered the intersection with both its lights and siren activated, said New Castle County Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Kelli Starr-Leach.

The impact caused the paramedic unit to hit a pickup that was stopped before the intersection, heading east on Scott Street, Navarro said.

The truck was pushed back as the paramedics' vehicle flipped, he said.

"The three paramedics climbed from the wreckage and began assessing the other occupants involved in the crash for injuries," Navarro said.

The paramedics had been on their way to help a person having difficulty breathing in the 2700 block of W. Fourth St., Starr-Leach said.

They were treated and released at Christiana Hospital, Navarro said.

The other four injured people, who suffered minor injuries, were taken to Wilmington Hospital. Their conditions were not available.

No charges were filed in connection with the collision, Navarro said, but the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities said they did not know how much damage the paramedics' vehicle sustained or how long it would be out of service.

Within five minutes of the crash, another unit of paramedics responded to the injured team's original call at The Lorelton, transporting the victim to St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington.
