Conn. Ambulance Crash Injures Five, Two Critically
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut

10.5.1999

West Haven Paramedics Were Transporting Injured Child

Four West Haven paramedics and an 8-year-old girl they were transporting to Yale-New Haven Hospital were injured when their ambulance collided with a car near the hospital.

The girl was being taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure following a car-pedestrian accident at a school bus stop. Her injuries from that accident were considered minor, but she was in critical condition following the ambulance crash. Police said the second vehicle collided broadside with the ambulance, knocking the ambulance onto its side.

Three of the medics and the girl were treated at Yale-New Haven, spokesman Ken Best said. James Woodman, 37, from Stratford, was training to take a West Haven job. He was in critical condition. Steven Dillman, 29, was in stable condition. Donald DiBianco, 40, was released after treatment Tuesday night.

The name of the injured girl, who was in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit, was not released.

An Acadian Ambulance paramedic, Keith Knight, 32 years old, was killed in a traffic accident involving an 18 wheeler Thursday in Beauregard Parish at approximately 2pm. The other medic on the ambulance, Kathy Fuselier, 41, was critically injured and transported by Air Med helicopter to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. The ambulance was returning from Dequincy to Lake Charles and was not on an emergency call and had no patient on board. The accident occurred on LA 12, 2 miles west of Ragley which is 23 miles north of Lake Charles. State Police Troop D and Beauregard Sheriff's office are investigating the accident. Knight was a Fire Chief in Beauregard Parish and was married with two children. Area medics involved in the call will undergo Critical Incident Stress Debriefing conducted by the Acadian Ambulance CISM Team. This is the first fatality of an on duty Acadian Ambulance medic assigned to a ground ambulance in the 27 years of Acadian's existence.
